Here is one of my photo assignments during my photo course at Rocky Mountain School of Photography in Missoula, Montana. The assignment was a photo essay of something at the Fall Fair. I choose to photograph Red. But not just Red...red in context of the fair. We had 3 days to fine the shots we were looking for. They could only be 8-10 images. That was the toughest part, weeding it down to just 10 images. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Wow, I can't believe it's been a year since I have been on here. So here I am going to make a better effort to upload some of my favorite pictures.

Last fall we did our last camping trip in Jasper. It was amazing. The most beautiful location I have ever been in for the fall. Here are a few of my favorite photos from that camping trip.

Red Hot Stilettos

Women have worn high-heeled shoes for hundreds of years, but the heel has never been so tall and narrow as on the stiletto heels that became popular in the early 1950s. A stiletto heel, named after a thin Italian dagger, could be as tall as four or five inches, and it narrowed to a point as small as three-eighths of an inch in diameter. The shoes forced women to stand on their tiptoes, clench their calf muscles, and thrust their chest forward for balance. The dramatic stance that the heels forced women to adopt was said to make the wearer look sexy and glamorous.

Stiletto heels remain to some a potent symbol of female power and sexuality.

Try and Try again

You know it's spring when the fields are dry and the teams are out day and night. Rugby seems to be my game of interest these days. What do those weird rugby words really mean.

Try - A try is scored when the ball is touched down behind the try line but in front of the dead ball line, called the in-goal area. It is worth five points, and the player scoring it must have control of the ball and apply downward pressure to it.

Conversion - After a try is scored the team that scored it can attempt to win two bonus points. A player tries to kick the ball from the ground between the posts, if they do it's worth two points.

Grubber - A kick along the ground that bounces awkwardly and is difficult to pick up or control

Tackle - When a defending player stops a player with the ball from running any further with it. They wrap their arms around the opposition player and bring them to the ground. They must tackle them below the chest.

Maul - If a player is tackled but doesn't fall to the ground, then other players are allowed to try and use their arms to steal the ball from them. This is called mauling

Scrum - If the play stops for a minor offence a scrum often restarts play. Both sets of forwards bind together and crouch down, leaning against each other. The scrum half from team that DIDN'T break the rules throws the ball into the scrum. The team throwing the ball in should win it back every time.

Lineout - If the ball goes out of play along side of the pitch play is restarted from a lineout. Both sets of forwards line up a metre apart and the hooker from the team who DIDN'T kick the ball out of play throws it in. In most cases the team throwing in should win the lineout

Ruck - If a player is tackled and falls to the ground he has to let go of the ball. Other players will then try and win the ball for their team. They do this by using their boots to drag the ball back to their team-mates, called rucking.

Call - Another way of saying which team is throwing the ball into a line out. The thrower will shout a code that tells his teammates who is throwing the ball too

Night at the Fair

The fair was in town this past weekend. Figured it would be a great time to play with some setting on the new camera. Played with ISO settings up to 6400, slower shutter speeds for the light effects as well as rear curtain flash to give that 'ghosting' look. It was a fun night! Looking forward to the next time they are in town.

Conflict

I'm not a combative person. My long experience has taught me to resolve conflict by raising the issues before I or others burn their boats.

Difficulties are meant to rouse, not discourage. The human spirit is to grow strong by conflict.

Don't be afraid of opposition. Remember, a kite rises against; not with; the wind.

“In a conflict, being willing to change allows you to move from a point of view to a viewing point -- a higher, more expansive place, from which you can see both sides.”

One might as well try to ride two horses moving in different directions, as to try to maintain in equal force two opposing or contradictory sets of desires.

True peace is not merely the absence of tension: it is the presence of justice.

It's not easy to be Green

Greetings, Kermit the Frog here

And today I'd like to tell you a little bit about the color green

Do you know what's green

Well I am for one thing You see frogs are green, and I'm a frog

And that means that I'm green, you see

It's not that easy being green

Having to spend each day the color of the leaves

When I think it could be nicer being red, or yellow, or gold

Or something much more colorful like that

It seems you blend in with so many other ordinary things

Mellow Yellow

My last two weeks were busy with work, a little mini holiday and then a family health emergency. It made me realize how much we as a society, Need to slow down....de-stress. We need to mellow out. That made me think of the song, Mellow yellow. Actually the lyrics are quite silly and don't really make much sense....They call me Mellow Yellow.

Yellow is a colour you see everywhere. Your produce section in the grocery store is full of it. There are many flowers in your garden that glow of this wonderful colour.

It is considered an optimistic colour.

However people lose their temper more in yellow rooms and babies cry more often.

It makes you feel sunny and happy. Like a bride on her wedding day.

Yellow is warm, like the gentle glow of candle light.

It is sunshine. It is inviting.

Yellow ribbons were worn as a sign of hope as women waited from their men to come marching home from war. Today, they are still used to welcome home loved ones.

Its use for hazard signs creates an association between yellow and danger. Cheerful sunny yellow is an attention getter. It is the most difficult color for the eye to take in, so it can be overpowering if overused.

Yellow enhances concentration, It also speeds metabolism.

Purple

When I think of Purple I think of royalty, luxury, wealth, and sophistication.

It is also feminine and romantic.

Don't forget that big friendly purple dinasour Barney. And how about that 80's song Purple rain...."I only wanted to see you laughing in the purple rain".

Lavendar...my favorite.

I did a photoshoot a few weeks back with this little baby girl dressed in this little purple dress,

it was my inspiration for this post....however I didn't realize how rare in nature purple really is.

For this reason purple can appear artificial. However it still is an amazing colour.

PINK....It's cotton candy...

When people are sad they say they are blue, however here is a different preception....

Today we took a walk up the street

We picked a flower and climbed a hill above the lake

Red....

The most emotionally intense color, red stimulates a faster heartbeat and breathing. It is also the color of love. Red clothing gets noticed and makes the wearer appear heavier. Since it is an extreme color, red clothing might not help people in negotiations or confrontations. Red cars are popular targets for thieves. In decorating, red is usually used as an accent. Decorators say that red furniture should be perfect since it will attract attention. Red is often used in restaurant decorating schemes because it is an appetite stimulant.

Mr Toad's Wild Ride

As they neared the door it was flung open, and Mr Toad, arrayed in goggles, cap, gaiters, and enormous overcoat, came swaggering down the steps, drawing on his gauntleted gloves.'

Stepped right out of the classic story Wind in the Willows, was my 18 year old son. He normally doesn't like to have his picture taken, however at the moment, he came to me and said "Take my picture."

What a fun experience I was blessed with.

Sorrow

I started my emotion journey through pictures with Joy so I figured it would be perfect to do the opposite...

Sorrow: an emotion of great sadness associated with loss or bereavement;

I found the most expressive faces around are children. These few picture are the children of the future showing their true unhappiness, their sorrows. Here they aren't in any physical pain, just feeling great sadness. Think about the things that make a child cry....

Hungry ( Do we shed tears for the hungry people of the world?)
Tired ( Do we shed tears for those who have no where to sleep?)

Lonely ( Do we shed tears for those left alone when a loved one dies?)
Dirty ( Do we shed tears for those who live in poverty with nothing but dirty water?)

Joy

Today I was asked if this blog is about photography or my life story. I was offended at first. However then I thought about it and realized not everyone 'gets' it. Here is what I mean. I don't take a photo because something is beautiful or pretty. I take the photograph because of what I feel. It's not about what you see with your eyes it's what you see with your heart. I feel what the camera sees. It's about framing a moment in time. It's about capturing an emotion forever.

I decided that the new few posts would be about just that...emotions. So the first one I wanted to share is "Joy".

Joy (noun)
1.the emotion of great delight or happiness caused by something exceptionally good or satisfying; keen pleasure; elation: She felt the joy of seeing her son's success.
2.a source or cause of keen pleasure or delight; something or someone greatly valued or appreciated: Her prose style is a pure joy.

Here I am sharing 4 photographs for you to see. I believe I have captured the meaning of joy in them. When I look at these photos I get this amazing feeling. It reminds me Colbie Caillat song Bubbly.

colours

It's amazing how some days one can be on top of the world and other days at the bottom. I'm not talking about tragic events or horrible things happening. I'm talking about generally feeling 'full of happiness' and other days (for no reason at all) feeling 'full of sadness'. It's like someone took the colour out of the sky. Like the world became dull and lifeless. How one day the smallest things can make you smile and other days nothing can bring that smile to your face.

On that September day when the first of these pictures was taken, I was having a 'bad' moment, yet in my tears I seen amazing colours. It made me feel new and alive. That even in the darkest moments there is a light.

On the December day when the second of these pictures was taken, I was a having a grand day. I felt full of life and ready to conquer the world. Yet the picture looks dark and full of sadness.

Isn't life full of surprizes!

Seasons of Time

The first page in this wonderful magazine my best friend gave me for Christmas had these amazing words...

'I was thinking the other day how like a magic wand a camera can be. Like a wizard, a photographer can point a camera at something and stop time, capturing a moment forever - or even more powerfully, transform what it sees into something totally unrecognizable.'

It made think of these three photos. Just by my house is this little walking bridge. It crosses not a river or a stream but more of a run off of water. Most people look at this running water as nothing special it's just a trickle of water separating the little sports centre island from the city. However what I see is an amazing view. Natural beauty in the middle of the city. As you can see I have stood on that little bridge and photographed fall, summer and yesterday I caught winter.

When the sun melts the snow and the trees start to bud I will know that spring has come. At that time I will walk once again to that bridge and finish my collection of Seasons of Time.

Winter Snow Angels

I love a warm winter day covered in snow. It's even more beauitful when you add the pure beauty of little girls. I took pictures of my daughters when they were around 7 or 8. They dressed up in pretty dresses. I curled their hair. They were wrapped up in my fur coat and topped the outfit off with my grandmothers hat. It was a delightful day. Pictures that are forever fond in my heart. I turned the photos into Valentine's cards and sent the to all my family and friends who I cherished. Today reminded me of that day, so I convinced my one daughter ( the only one was sick in bed) to dress up once again for me. I included my step daughter in our photo adventure. We spend almost an hour. Although she properly didn't enjoy it as much as me...the day was perfect. It will be a moment I will cherish. It's amazing how much they grow up. I am glad that I have thousands of photos of all those special moments.

Beautiful Winter Day in BC

So I figured that the first picture I should post on my new blog is one of me. I am usually behind the camera not in front of it. However this was a beautiful winter day at Granville Island, Vancouver and I wanted to capture the way I felt. The picture was taken on my new Canon ESO 5D Mark II with a 50 mm lens.
